An opportunity arose when Sr. Eneless Chimbali, then Secretary General of ACWECA, attended the 3rd Vatican Conference on Impact Investing in Rome in 2018. The conference aimed to help Institutes of Sisters transition from donor dependence to self-reliance.

During her visit, Sr. Eneless met with staff from the Miller Center for Social Entrepreneurship at Santa Clara University in the USA. Their discussions led to the conception of the Sisters Blended Value Project (SBVP). The SBVP is designed to equip participating Sisters with the skills needed to start and manage income-generating activities that sustain their religious Institutes.The project provides practical, hands-on learning experiences, training, and start-up skills in social entrepreneurship for Catholic Sisters, enabling their Institutes to lead social entrepreneurship initiatives more effectively.

The “Blended Value” aspect of the SBVP combines profitability with social impact. Many of our ministries focus on serving the poor by sharing entrepreneurial skills, particularly with those living in severe poverty, to help them overcome their circumstances.The training, organized by the Miller Center in collaboration with ACWECA, aims to transform the Sisters’ social ministries into viable enterprises. It consists of two phases:

Apprenticeship Program

Sisters are trained by local social enterprises using successful business models. They are expected to replicate these models to start their own businesses. At the end of six months, they develop a business plan with a justifiable funding request.

Accelerator Program:

Sisters scale up their business strategies and follow the Miller Center’s curriculum structure. This phase provides opportunities to apply for grants and loans to expand their social enterprises.

Mother Kevin Providence Social Enterprise, an initiative of the Little Sisters of St. Francis, began in 2019 and was among the first four Institutes in the pilot group. During the training, Sisters acquire skills in poultry management, including housing selection, nutritious feeding, disease identification and treatment, marketing techniques, and financial record-keeping. This training aims to create community impact and generate income for the Institute. The primary goal for Sisters completing the program is to replicate these entrepreneurial initiatives within their Institutes and extend outreach to other Institutes that have not yet participated. Once the Sisters master these skills, they are tasked with passing them on to the most vulnerable in their communities to help them achieve self-sustainability.

Mother Kevin Providence Social Enterprise has expanded to Kamuli, Iganga, Busowa, and, more recently, to Kidetok in the Eastern Region, where Sr. Mary Florence Anaso, a co-founder, now manages the branch. Plans are underway to extend the Enterprise into Kenya and Tanzania.

We deeply appreciate ACWECA for providing us with the opportunity to participate in the Sisters Blended Value Program, which was instrumental in launching MKPSE. We are also grateful to the Miller Center for their training and ongoing mentorship. Special thanks go to Miller Center for generously providing us with access to their Zoom account, which has facilitated our entry into the world of technology and made organizing Zoom meetings much easier.

We also want to acknowledge Egg Prenuer for sharing their expertise, which we have successfully adapted and implemented in various ways.

With our expanded team, we are excited and prepared to scale our activities and services to benefit a broader community in Jinja, as well as our Sisters across six regions in three East African countries.
